Mental Health First Aid Training Melbourne

The Bear Essentials MHFA Training

Mental Health challenges can show up anywhere - at work, in education settings, in families, and in everyday life. Often, the first response doesn’t come from a professional, but from a colleague, friend, or someone who happens to be there in that critical moment.

Mental Health First Aid training gives people practical skills to recognise when someone may need support and to respond in a way that is calm, respectful, and helpful. It builds confidence to have meaningful conversations, offer initial support, and know how to guide someone toward appropriate help when needed.

At its core, Mental Health First Aid is about creating safer, more supportive environments where people feel understood and supported - not judged. My aim is to teach you the skills you need to have these conversations when they are needed.

The Bear Essentials MHFA Training provides Mental Health First Aid training for individuals, organisations, and communities across Naarm (Melbourne).

All are welcome

Acknowledgement of Country

I acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands on which I live and work, the Wurundjeri and Bunurong peoples of the Kulin Nation, and recognise their continuing connection to land, waters and community. I pay my respects to Elders past and present, and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. I acknowledge that this land always was, and always will be, Aboriginal land.

Acknowledgement of Lived Experience

This work recognises the importance of lived experience in the mental health sector. Lived experience of mental health challenges and recovery plays a vital role in informing and strengthening mental health education, and contributes to more compassionate, inclusive, and effective responses to mental health.

Mental health first aid education is informed by evidence, research, and the contributions of people with lived experience, while course delivery follows the MHFA curriculum and educational framework.

About Me

Hi, I’m Claire - a community services and mental health educator at TAFE and a qualified Mental Health First Aid Instructor based in Naarm (Melbourne), Australia.

I created The Bear Essentials MHFA Training because I believe in safe, non-judgemental and inclusive education for all, and I know from my own experience that Mental Health First Aid training can make a real difference when it’s needed. Mental Health First Aid conversations often happen when someone is struggling, overwhelmed, or in crisis, and it can be challenging to know how to respond in those moments. My approach focuses on giving people practical skills and language so they can navigate these critical conversations with confidence and respond with care and empathy in moments when it really matters.

I hold a Bachelor of Behavioural Science and additional qualifications in mental health, including ASIST suicide intervention, motivational interviewing, communication and conflict resolution, diversity and inclusion, and alcohol and other drugs (AOD) training. I also bring several years’ experience working as a community mental health worker and recovery coach, supporting people with complex and enduring mental health challenges.
